Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated Arthur Géa 4–1 in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinal after the Frenchman retired due to injury. The match lasted approximately 22 minutes. For the 25th-seeded Spaniard, the early victory secured his first semifinal at the tournament, while Géa was unable to complete his first quarterfinal at a Masters 1000 event.
Fast start from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
The two players had never faced each other prior to this encounter, but Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came out with immediate intent. He broke Arthur Géa in the very first service game and quickly established a 4–1 lead. The Spaniard dominated on serve, winning 85 percent of his service points and landing 69 percent of his first serves in play.
Géa, meanwhile, found no rhythm whatsoever. The Frenchman won just 35 percent of points on serve and could generate little pressure on return. Davidovich Fokina took his first clear break point opportunity and controlled proceedings from the baseline thereafter.
Injury ends Géa's debut run
The physical problems had, however, been troubling Arthur Géa even before the match began. During his morning warm-up, he felt a sharp pain in the psoas — the hip flexor muscle connecting the trunk to the thigh. The 21-year-old had been uncertain whether to take to the court at all, but decided to give it a go regardless.
After falling behind early, Géa called for a medical timeout. The pain in his right leg and hip, however, no longer allowed him to move freely. After the first point following treatment, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina could see that his opponent was no longer able to run properly. The Spaniard continued to make him work, but Géa retired at 4–1.
Arthur Géa left the court visibly shaken and in tears. The retirement brought an end to a remarkable week in which he had beaten the likes of Ben Shelton and Jakub Mensik. Twelve months ago, Géa had been ranked 254th in the world. His run in Shanghai secured him a place inside the top 50 for the first time, as well as 175 additional ATP ranking points.
Davidovich Fokina continues his comeback run
For Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the win was another step forward in an impressive comeback phase. The Spaniard had previously been sidelined for more than two months with a back disc protrusion, and Shanghai was only his third tournament since returning to action. On tour since his comeback, he carried a record of 8–1.
The semifinal berth represents Davidovich Fokina's best-ever result at the Shanghai Masters and his fourth Masters 1000 semifinal appearance overall. He had previously reached that stage in Monte-Carlo, Canada, and Monte-Carlo again. His two titles in 2026 had come on grass in Mallorca and on hard court in Chengdu.
The result reflected two very different tournament stories: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina continuing his resurgent form, while Arthur Géa made significant strides despite his unfortunate exit through injury. The quarterfinal ended prematurely, with the 4–1 scoreline going in Davidovich Fokina's favour.
