Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated Andre Ilagan 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the Shanghai Masters semifinal. The Georgian prevailed in a hard-fought match on the outdoor hard court, recovering after Ilagan had taken the second set in a tiebreak. Basilashvili found his footing in the deciding set and sealed his place in the next round.
Basilashvili sets the tone in the first set
Basilashvili approached the contest with the necessary conviction, pressing Ilagan from the baseline and quickly establishing control over rallies. Ilagan, a left-handed American from Honolulu, looked to come forward regularly but could not consistently disrupt the Georgian's rhythm in the early stages.
The first set went to Basilashvili 6-3. The 6-foot-1 right-hander drew on his experience on hard courts, keeping extended exchanges steady with his two-handed backhand. Ilagan was forced to play from a defensive position for much of the set and could only intermittently find answers to his opponent's aggressive hitting.
Ilagan forces a tiebreak
Ilagan raised his level considerably in the second set. The 5-foot-8 left-hander landed his returns more cleanly and increased the pressure on Basilashvili's service games, turning the set into an evenly contested affair in which neither player could pull clear.
Ilagan showed the greater composure in the tiebreak and levelled at 7-6. Basilashvili lost the set but remained in the match. The American had forced the equaliser with a focused display and carried clear momentum into the third set.
Basilashvili stays composed in the deciding set
In the third set, Basilashvili had to shake off the pressure of a potential exit. He managed to do so, even as Ilagan continued to vary the rallies and posed new problems with his left-handed serve. The Georgian responded calmly, consistently looking to seize the initiative.
The match statistics underlined Basilashvili's slight edge. He won 82 percent of his service games and took 51 percent of total points. He also struck 32 winners to Ilagan's 24, though seven double faults meant he had to stay particularly sharp on his second serve.
In the deciding set, the Georgian held firm under pressure. Ilagan fought to the last ball, but Basilashvili used his experience to come through in the key moments. The third set went to Basilashvili 7-5.
Experience proves the difference
The victory was another significant step forward for Basilashvili in Shanghai. The Georgian was seeded 16th in the qualifying draw and ranked 121st in the world at the time of the match. Andre Ilagan stood at 195th and pushed the more experienced man all the way.
Basilashvili, who reached his career-best ranking of 16th in May 2019, demonstrated greater resilience after dropping the tiebreak. Ilagan left the court on the losing side despite a strong fightback in the second set, as Basilashvili celebrated a semifinal victory by a scoreline of 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.
