Pablo Carreño Busta defeated Alejandro Tabilo 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard turned around a hard-fought contest on hardcourt after Tabilo had taken the opening set. The turning point came in the second-set tiebreak, with Carreño Busta going on to see out the match with composure.
Carreño Busta kept his cool after the slow start
Alejandro Tabilo entered the match as a seeded player and had therefore received a bye in the first round. The left-handed Chilean settled quickly into the contest, putting Pablo Carreño Busta under pressure with his varied baseline game. Carreño Busta, who had come through qualifying to reach the second round, dropped the opening set 4-6.
The Spaniard refused to be unsettled, however. Carreño Busta played with patience, keeping rallies alive from the baseline and waiting for the right moments to step inside the court. Tabilo remained a threat, but the match gradually became more evenly contested.
The tiebreak brought the turning point
The second set remained tight throughout. Both players largely held their own on return, and no clear advantage emerged. Carreño Busta manoeuvred himself into the better position as the set reached its decisive phase and held his nerve when it mattered most.
In the tiebreak, the Spaniard prevailed 7-2. That levelled the match at one set apiece and shifted the momentum firmly in Carreño Busta's favour. Tabilo had enjoyed the stronger start, but now found himself pushed into a deciding set.
Spaniard seized the crucial opportunities
Carreño Busta was more clinical in the third set. The right-hander found his length more consistently and forced Tabilo into increasingly difficult shot-making. The Spaniard closed out the set 6-4 to complete a three-set victory.
The match statistics reflected how closely contested the encounter was overall. Carreño Busta won 51 per cent of total points and converted 72 per cent of points on his first serve. He also struck eight aces and produced 47 winners. Tabilo managed nine aces of his own, but 29 unforced errors ultimately cost him, and he was unable to build on the advantage he had established in the opening set.
The win was particularly valuable for Carreño Busta given that he had already battled through a three-set match against Mariano Navone earlier in the tournament. Heading into this encounter, the Spaniard led their head-to-head record 2-1. His experience — he reached a career-high ranking of world number ten — proved telling in the tight moments. Alejandro Tabilo, whose best ranking stands at number 19, meanwhile falls short of the next round.
