Wednesday brings another major contest as Bayern Munich host Arsenal. Elsewhere, Liverpool FC welcome Villarreal, Real Madrid face RB Leipzig and Austrian side LASK travel to Sporting Lisbon for a demanding away fixture.
PSG vs Barcelona: European heavyweights ready to go head-to-head
Tuesday, October 20, 9pm – Champions League
Two of Europe’s most in-form teams meet at the Parc des Princes. Barcelona travel to the French capital with a remarkable record: Hansi Flick’s side have won all 11 of their competitive matches this season.
Their latest victory came in a turbulent 5-2 encounter away to Real Betis. Lamine Yamal was once again instrumental, contributing a spectacular goal and an assist. Despite the convincing scoreline, however, Barcelona showed defensive vulnerabilities. Betis repeatedly exploited the space behind their high defensive line and remained firmly in contention until a red card shifted the balance.
Barcelona have been just as prolific in the Champions League. A 5-1 victory over Feyenoord was followed by a 4-1 win at Galatasaray. Nine goals in two matches underline the threat Flick’s team pose when their quick combinations around the opposition penalty area begin to flow.
Paris Saint-Germain have also opened their European campaign with two victories. A 6-1 demolition of Slovan Bratislava was followed by a more significant statement: a 4-2 away win against Manchester City. Against one of Europe’s strongest sides, Luis Enrique’s team demonstrated their ability to play through intense pressure and create openings against elite opposition.
PSG needed a late comeback to secure a 3-1 victory at Strasbourg over the weekend. After falling behind, Illia Zabarnyi, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué turned the match around. Luis Enrique had made eight changes to the side that beat Manchester City, giving several regular starters an opportunity to recover.
Defensive injuries leave both coaches with difficult decisions
Team selection could prove particularly challenging in defence. Barcelona are without Jules Koundé and Eric García, both of whom sustained injuries over the weekend. Gerard Martín is also carrying a knock, while Andreas Christensen remains unavailable.
That leaves Flick facing a serious shortage of defensive options ahead of a meeting with one of Europe’s most dangerous attacks. Pau Cubarsí is the only fully fit specialist centre-back from his usual group. Alongside João Cancelo, Alejandro Balde and Xavi Espart, Flick may therefore need to consider unconventional solutions, potentially moving Rodri or Frenkie de Jong into defence.
PSG have problems of their own, with Nuno Mendes ruled out. The Portuguese left-back suffered a thigh injury against Strasbourg and is expected to miss several weeks. His absence is particularly significant given his ability to drive forward at pace while also providing defensive cover against opposition wingers.
Lucas Hernández or Lucas Digne could deputise on the left. Both offer experience, but neither possesses quite the same dynamism as Mendes. That difference could be crucial against Yamal.
A fascinating tactical battle awaits in Paris
Both coaches favour proactive, attack-minded football. Barcelona look to establish long spells of possession through Rodri and Pedri, with Fermín López finding space between the lines. Out wide, Yamal and his fellow attackers stretch defences and create opportunities for combinations through the middle.
Under Luis Enrique, PSG also prioritise possession, combining fluid positional rotations with aggressive counterpressing. Vitinha and João Neves provide structure in midfield, while Dembélé, Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia constantly change positions to create passing options and unsettle defenders.
A decisive factor could be how quickly each side reacts after losing possession. Barcelona’s high defensive line offers PSG opportunities to attack directly into space. Conversely, the French champions could struggle if quick switches of play leave Yamal isolated against whoever replaces Mendes.
Their opening Champions League results highlight the attacking quality on display: Barcelona have scored nine goals, PSG ten. Both teams, however, have also shown they can be vulnerable to fast counter-attacks.
An intense, open contest with opportunities at both ends therefore looks likely. Barcelona’s perfect start is impressive, but their defensive absences could prove far more costly against PSG than they did against Betis. There is little to separate the two sides heading into this encounter.
Liverpool vs Villarreal: Reds aiming to maintain perfect European start
Tuesday, October 20, 9pm – Champions League
Liverpool FC welcome Villarreal looking to make it three Champions League victories from three. Their opening 2-1 win against Atlético Madrid was followed by a spectacular 6-3 triumph away to LASK, with Bradley Barcola scoring a hat-trick.
Liverpool also secured an important Premier League victory over the weekend, coming from behind to beat Brentford 2-1. The introduction of Rio Ngumoha added fresh impetus to their attacking play.
Head coach Andoni Iraola remains without Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong. Villarreal, meanwhile, recovered from an opening 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund by beating Napoli 3-1 in their second European fixture.
Liverpool start as favourites at Anfield, although they will need to defend Villarreal’s quick transitions more effectively than they did in Linz.
Bayern vs Arsenal: Bundesliga giants face Premier League champions without Olise
Wednesday, October 21, 9pm – Champions League
Bayern Munich enter their meeting with Arsenal following an emphatic domestic performance. Vincent Kompany’s side thrashed RB Leipzig 6-1, with Luis Díaz scoring three times.
Their latest European outing was considerably less convincing. Away to Norway’s Viking FK, Bayern recovered from a two-goal deficit to lead 3-2, only to concede a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw. Michael Olise’s suspension following his dismissal represents another major setback, ruling the winger out of the Arsenal clash.
Arsenal have won their opening two Champions League matches against Napoli and Lille without conceding. Mikel Arteta’s side also secured a narrow 1-0 Premier League victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Bayern’s formidable attacking power will therefore come up against a disciplined Arsenal side capable of finding ways to win even the tightest encounters.
LASK look to build on domestic victory at Sporting
Wednesday, October 21, 9pm – Champions League
LASK head to Sporting Lisbon buoyed by their first victory in six competitive matches. Dietmar Kühbauer’s side claimed an emphatic 4-0 away win over Austria Lustenau at the weekend, with Saša Kalajdžić, Samuel Adeniran and Christoph Lang, who scored twice, providing the goals.
Kühbauer made six changes from the 6-3 defeat against Liverpool. Sascha Horvath’s return to the starting line-up was particularly encouraging, although injuries remain a concern. George Bello is still sidelined, while Moses Usor’s availability remains uncertain.
LASK are yet to collect a Champions League point following defeats against AEK Athens and Liverpool. Sporting, by contrast, have won both their opening fixtures, beating Galatasaray 3-1 and Lens 2-0. Luis Suárez, who scored in both matches, poses a particular threat to the Austrian side’s defence.
To stand a chance in Lisbon, LASK will need to defend far more compactly than they did against Liverpool. Horvath’s vision and Kalajdžić’s physical presence could nevertheless offer useful attacking outlets.
Real Madrid aim to build on Sevilla win against Leipzig
Wednesday, October 21, 9pm – Champions League
Real Madrid approach their meeting with RB Leipzig full of confidence after beating Sevilla 4-1. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, with Arda Güler and Yan Diomande also on target. José Mourinho’s side have now won seven of their opening nine league matches but already trail leaders Barcelona by six points.
Madrid have made a perfect start to their Champions League campaign with victories over Inter and Roma. Leipzig have won one of their opening two fixtures, responding to defeat at Como with a 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven.
Their latest Bundesliga outing, however, was a chastening experience. Martín Demichelis’s team suffered a 6-1 defeat at Bayern Munich, repeatedly leaving themselves exposed after losing possession.
Leipzig will need a much more compact defensive structure at the Santiago Bernabéu. With Mbappé particularly dangerous when given space to attack, Madrid enter the contest as clear favourites.
