Federico Cinà defeated Linang Xiao 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal at the Shanghai Masters. The Italian found himself under early pressure but worked his way back into the match on the hard court to complete the turnaround. Despite winning the first set, Xiao could not prevent defeat.
Xiao made the stronger start
Linang Xiao began with focus and purpose, putting Federico Cinà under pressure early in the first set. The Chinese player converted his return opportunities consistently and dictated much of the baseline play. Cinà struggled to find his usual depth and was forced to surrender the opening set 2-6.
The serve statistics also favoured Xiao in that opening phase. The Chinese player landed 55 percent of first serves and won 69 percent of points behind them. Cinà was largely kept on the back foot and was unable to build any sustained attacking momentum.
Cinà rediscovered his game through the serve
The second set told a different story. Federico Cinà upped the aggression with his first ball after the serve and moved forward to the net more regularly. Linang Xiao could no longer maintain his baseline consistency, while Cinà steadied his service games.
The Italian won 70 percent of points on first serve, limiting the opportunities for Linang Xiao to get into threatening return positions. At the same time, Cinà sharpened his break point conversion, taking the second set 6-3 to level the match.
Linang Xiao remained alert and fended off several difficult moments, but gradually lost his grip on the longer rallies. Federico Cinà grew increasingly patient, waited for the right moment, and then struck with precise shot-making. Levelling the match gave the Italian a visible boost in confidence.
The deciding set belonged to Cinà
In the third set, Federico Cinà took full control. He moved further inside the baseline, taking time away from Linang Xiao and forcing the Chinese player into increasingly difficult shots. The difference was most apparent on return: Cinà won 40 percent of return points and kept Xiao under pressure on serve throughout.
Linang Xiao had no answer to his opponent's more varied game. Cinà stayed composed in the key moments, played the important points with conviction, and never relinquished control. He took the deciding set 6-2.
Another milestone for the qualifier
The win further underlines Federico Cinà's development over the course of this season. Born in Palermo in 2007, the Italian entered the tournament as a qualifier seeded 23rd, having reached a career-high ranking of 168 on 14 September. In March, he claimed his first ATP Challenger title in Pune.
The victory over Linang Xiao was also a testament to Cinà's mental resilience. After losing the opening set so decisively, he found exactly the right balance between patience and attacking intent. His match statistics reflected the remarkable turnaround: Cinà won 54 percent of total points and held serve on 85 percent of his service games. Linang Xiao, who had begun his tournament run through qualifying as a wildcard, ultimately had no answer to his opponent's second-set transformation.
