On the outdoor hard courts of the Cincinnati Open, Quentin Halys swept into the ATP Masters 1000 main draw on August 13, 2026. The 29-year-old Frenchman dispatched Chinese home favourite Bu Yunchaokete 6-2, 7-6, showcasing his imposing serve and composure under pressure at the critical moments.
Halys dominates the opening set
Halys seized control from the very first game. His serve was a weapon of relentless precision: he won 94 percent of points on his first serve and gave Bu virtually no foothold in the return game. Bu managed to win just six percent of points returning first serves — a figure that laid bare just how helpless the Chinese player was during that phase. Halys converted three of four break points and took the opening set 6-2 in commanding fashion.
Particularly striking was his tally of 14 aces across the entire match, a testament to his consistent serving. Bu, competing as China's current world No. 1 and with a career-high ranking of 64, had no answer to that serving barrage in the first set.
A tight second set settled by tiebreak
Bu raised his level noticeably in the second set. He worked his way back into the match, held serve more solidly and forced Halys into a closely contested battle. Both players held their service games for long stretches, pushing the set to a tiebreak. Yet there, too, Halys kept his composure, winning it convincingly 7-2.
The statistics underline just how dominant Halys was throughout: he won 75 percent of all service games, struck 31 winners compared to just 16 from Bu, and committed only 19 unforced errors — Bu made 23. Halys was never forced to save a single break point, as Bu barely created any; Bu himself, meanwhile, converted just 25 percent of his break points.
Halys riding high — into the main draw
The victory slots seamlessly into a remarkable chapter in Halys's career. Just recently, the Frenchman claimed his first ATP title in Kitzbühel — becoming the first Frenchman in the Open Era to win that tournament. In the final he defeated top seed Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6, having already beaten him in Gstaad earlier in the summer.
Now entering Cincinnati as a qualifier, Halys left nothing to chance on his march into the main draw. Against Bu Yunchaokete — who had also lost their only previous meeting, likewise in a third qualifying round at the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters — there was no reversal of fortunes. With his place secured in the ATP Masters 1000 main draw in Cincinnati, the 29-year-old has sent an emphatic statement about his arrival among the world's elite.
