The 2026 MotoGP World Championship battle is beautifully poised with six rounds remaining, as Jorge Martin leads Marc Marquez by just two points heading into this weekend’s Indonesian Grand Prix.
MotoGP returns to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit at an intriguing moment in the title fight, with Marquez still searching for his first MotoGP Grand Prix finish at the Lombok venue after four attempts.
The nine-time World Champion has also suffered serious injuries at the circuit following major crashes in 2022 and 2025.
“Make no mistakes and take home as many big points as possible”
However, MotoGP Expert Tom Lüthi believes Marquez, who scored a double victory at last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, remains “certainly one to watch” in Indonesia.
“The World Championship battle in the MotoGP class is heating up. Marc Marquez is hot on the heels of Jorge Martin again,” said Lüthi.
“It’s getting really tight at the front, and the mantra for both riders remains, of course: make no mistakes and take home as many big points as possible.
“Marc Marquez doesn’t exactly have fond memories of Indonesia. Last year, he crashed alongside Bezzecchi in the Grand Prix, sustaining a serious shoulder injury. Even before that, when the circuit was first added to the calendar, he crashed and was injured again. So, not exactly great memories for Marc at this track.
“But this is a new year, and given his current form following his double win in Japan, Marquez is certainly one to watch here in Indonesia as well.”
Pedro Acosta holds high hopes at Mandalika
Last year’s Indonesian Grand Prix suggests Aprilia will be difficult to beat again this weekend. Had Marco Bezzecchi not crashed alongside Marquez during last year’s MotoGP race, he could have gone on to score an emphatic double victory.
Jorge Martin also arrives in strong form, having scored Sprint and Grand Prix podium doubles at each of the past two rounds.
Yet Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta is another rider with high hopes for the Indonesian MotoGP Grand Prix.
The Spaniard enjoys the fast and flowing Mandalika layout and has scored two Grand Prix podiums at the circuit over the past two seasons.
With the 2026 MotoGP title now likely out of reach, Acosta has instead set his sights on overcoming Bezzecchi and finishing third in this year’s World Championship standings.
That makes Mandalika another important opportunity for Acosta to close the gap to the Aprilia rider and build momentum during the final six rounds of the season.
Mandalika circuit presents major tyre management challenge
The 4.3km Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit is one of the most spectacular venues on the MotoGP calendar.
Located on the tropical island of Lombok, the circuit sits alongside the beach and offers spectacular views of the Indian Ocean.
However, the fast and technical layout also creates a major challenge for MotoGP riders, particularly when it comes to tyre management.
Lüthi believes the high track temperatures in Indonesia could play a crucial role over the full Grand Prix distance.
“The circuit itself is a very nice one,” said Lüthi.
“It has lots of technical sections, lots of places where you have to brake whilst leaning into the corner. You don’t just have to keep an eye on the rear tyre to make sure it lasts the distance, but on the front tyre as well.
“And Indonesia is always characterised by very high track temperatures. It’s all very exciting.”
With Martin leading Marquez by just two points and Acosta targeting another strong result, the Indonesian MotoGP Grand Prix could prove crucial for both the championship battle and the fight for third place in the standings.
