Marc Marquez gained a massive psychological edge in the 2026 MotoGP World Championship fight as he won his ninth MotoGP Sprint victory of the season after Jorge Martin crashed out of a dramatic victory fight.
As a result, Marquez retakes the World Championship lead outright for only the second time this year with Martin taken to the medical centre for a check up to decide whether he can ride on Sunday.
The Sprint was the final one at Phillip Island as host of the Australian Grand Prix, adding further significance to a dramatic afternoon of racing.
Pedro Acosta fifth after hectic podium fight
Pedro Acosta continued his brilliant run of form by scoring a fine fifth place after conesting the podium paces for the race’s first half.
Despite the threat of rain throughout the 13 laps, the 18th MotoGP Sprint of 2026 was held in dry conditions. Acosta gained two places on the first lap to sit fifth at the end of lap one.
The 22-year old was soon involved in a thrilling five-way fight for victory, which also included Marquez, Martin, Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco.
Even if he lost ground in the closing laps, Acosta still took a fine fifth at one of his weaker tracks, just 3.6s from the victor.
It was an excellent day overall for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as Brad Binder fought through to seventh for his best MotoGP Sprint performance since the Spanish Grand Prix in April.
Marquez wins, Martin crashes in huge championship twist
It was a massive day in the 2026 MotoGP World Championship fight. For six and a half laps, chief title protagonists Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin engaged in a thrilling battle for victory.
The two Spaniards exchanged the lead various times, with Martin passing his MotoGP adversary on numerous occasions into Turn 1, only for Marquez to get back past on the inside of Turn 2.
It appeared Martin had enough to pass and pull away. But the Aprilia rider suffered a massive crash on the eighth lap when he lost the front at the ferociously fast Turn 8 when sat in second.
From there, Marquez was able to take a narrow win by 0.3s to reclaim the World Championship lead by ten points – his biggest advantage of the year.
Meanwhile, Martin was diagnosed with a fractured right radius, which has put him out of the rest of the weekend. His championship hopes now hang by a thread.
Alex Marquez, Di Giannantonio and Bezzecchi contest podium places
Even after Martin’s crash, the MotoGP Sprint was still filled with drama. Alex Marquez closed in on the lead battle at mid-race distance, with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi also joining in.
Alex Marquez didn’t quite have the speed to pass his elder brother but took a brilliant second place, just 0.3s back of the nine-time World Champion.
Di Giannantonio took a super third place, just 0.5s back of the winner to make it an all-Ducati podium.
While it was a far from ideal day for Aprilia, there were positives in the form of Bezzecchi. The Italian was the quickest rider in the dry on Friday, and made a scintillating recovery from a poor qualifying performance of ninth in wet conditions.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix, with Marquez holding a ten-point championship advantage. Martin’s absence offers up a brilliant chance for the World Champion to extend his lead further.
