Marc Marquez took his eighth MotoGP Sprint victory of the 2026 season at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Saturday, benefiting from late drama for long-time leader Jorge Martin at the Mandalika International Circuit.
The result puts Marquez at the top of the MotoGP World Championship standings for the first time in 2026, giving him a four-point advantage over Martin heading into Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix race.
Pedro Acosta recovers from Long Lap Penalty to finish sixth
Pedro Acosta finished an impressive sixth in the MotoGP Sprint at Mandalika after recovering from a Long Lap Penalty.
The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider started ninth on the grid but made an excellent start, gaining four positions on the opening lap to move into fifth place and immediately join the fight for the podium.
Acosta then found himself battling behind Ai Ogura and Fabio Di Giannantonio in the fight for third. However, he was handed a Long Lap Penalty for exceeding track limits, forcing him to surrender valuable time.
Taking the penalty with four laps remaining, the 22-year-old rejoined in sixth place between the two Gresini Ducati riders.
Although Acosta missed out on a potential podium finish, his pace will give him confidence heading into Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix.
It was a more difficult Sprint for KTM team-mate Brad Binder. The South African made a strong start but struggled with rear grip as he finished 16th.
Jorge Martin takes the lead after Turn 1 chaos
MotoGP World Championship contenders Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez both benefited from a dramatic opening corner at the Mandalika International Circuit.
Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marquez attempted to pass Raul Fernandez and Marco Bezzecchi into Turn 1, but Di Giannantonio ran wide, forcing Bezzecchi to sit up before crashing. Fernandez also fell in the incident.
Martin capitalised on the chaos by diving to the inside and emerging in the lead, completing an impressive turnaround from fifth on the starting grid.
With two of the quickest riders from qualifying out of the race, the Spaniard was able to establish a comfortable advantage at the front.
Meanwhile, Marquez defended his second position from a three-rider group behind. At that stage, Martin appeared poised to extend his championship lead to five points.
Marc Marquez benefits from late Jorge Martin drama
The MotoGP Sprint took another dramatic turn with three laps remaining, when Martin began to slow at the front of the field.
After looking over his shoulder on the exit of Turn 1, the Aprilia rider allowed Marquez to pass before attempting to stay with his title rival.
Martin briefly closed back in on Marquez but narrowly avoided a crash at Turn 15 on the penultimate lap when his rear tyre stepped out.
The mistake forced Martin off the track, and he rejoined in fourth place, surrendering his chance of victory.
Marquez took full advantage to secure a crucial Sprint win in the MotoGP title fight. Ai Ogura produced an impressive ride from seventh on the grid to finish second, while Di Giannantonio completed the podium in third.
Marc Marquez takes MotoGP championship lead
The result puts Marc Marquez at the top of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship standings outright for the first time this season.
The nine-time World Champion will carry a four-point lead over Martin into Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix, setting up another important contest between the championship rivals.
Bezzecchi’s hopes of fighting for the world title have suffered a major blow following his opening-corner crash. The Italian now sits 59 points behind the championship leader, although he will be eager to bounce back in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
With Marquez leading the championship and Martin looking to recover after his late Sprint disappointment, Sunday’s race at Mandalika promises to be another pivotal moment in the 2026 MotoGP title battle.
