Arthur Fils defeated Pavel Vyacheslavovich Kotov 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 Rolex Shanghai Masters. The eighth-seeded Frenchman dictated play on the hard courts from the very first game and never allowed his composure to slip, even as the second set tightened late on. It was Fils' tournament opener, having received a first-round bye, while Kotov arrived in Shanghai already carrying three wins as a qualifier.
Fils makes the brighter start
The match was played on Grandstand 2 under a closed roof due to rain. Fils took immediate advantage of the conditions, breaking Kotov's opening service game to lead 1-0 and quickly stretching that advantage to 3-0. The Frenchman played with intent from the baseline, kept Kotov on the move and largely neutralised his opponent's return game.
Pavel Vyacheslavovich Kotov did not create a single break point throughout the first set. Fils held serve without difficulty and closed out the set in controlled fashion, 6-3. His clear superiority was reflected in the error count: the Frenchman made just nine unforced errors across the entire match, compared to 21 from Kotov.
Early break proves decisive in the second set too
Fils found the decisive opening just as quickly in the second set, breaking Kotov's serve for the second time in that player's second service game. The 22-year-old then maintained the pressure without taking unnecessary risks, and while Kotov searched for answers, he was unable to consistently trouble the Frenchman's return game.
Fils served for the match at 5-4. Three match points went begging as Kotov returned sharply and even worked his way to break points of his own, but Fils repelled them with composed serving before completing the set 6-4 shortly afterwards. He had held every single service game in the opening set and wrapped up the match without the need for a deciding set.
Dominant serve and a clear overall picture
The match statistics underlined Fils' control. He won 100 per cent of his service games and took 73 per cent of points on his own serve, winning 79 per cent behind his first delivery. Kotov, by contrast, failed to convert any of his break points and was unable to break serve at all.
Fils hit eight aces and struck 24 winners. Kotov managed four aces and 22 winners but was undone far more frequently by unforced errors. Fils also held a clear edge on return, winning 41 per cent of return points to keep Kotov under sustained pressure throughout.
What the win means for Fils' run in the tournament
The victory extended Fils' head-to-head record against Kotov to 2-0, with their previous meeting having also taken place in Shanghai and also going to the Frenchman. The win also marked Fils' seventh consecutive victory at a Masters 1000 event. The world number eleven claimed his first title at that level in Cincinnati over the summer and is chasing valuable ranking points in Shanghai as he bids to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Despite the defeat, Kotov can leave Shanghai with his head held high after a strong week. The world number 187 had come through qualifying and beaten Tallon Griekspoor to reach the second round. For Fils, however, the journey continues — after a commanding opening performance, his next challenge in the Shanghai main draw now awaits.
