With the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring approaching, the statistics tell their own story – and Tom Lüthi’s prediction aligns with them. “The favourite on this circuit is, almost every year – if he’s not injured – Marc Márquez,” says the former MotoGP rider.
The world champion has “by far the most wins” there, “the circuit suits him very, very well.” Known for its abundance of left-hand turns, “that plays to his strengths, so this year too you can really expect him to win there,” Lüthi adds. “But in MotoGP, anything can always happen.”
The track is “special. It’s relatively compact, it’s relatively short, and also very technical,” he explains. “There aren’t many fast sections. There’s a very, very high number of left-leaning corners. You constantly have to manage the rear tyre carefully. Riding on the left side for so long causes the tyre to overheat very easily – especially in the MotoGP class, that’s decisive.”
