The first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League 2026/27 first qualifying round at the Stade Municipal de la Ville de Differdange ended goalless between FC Differdange 03 and Finnish representatives Ilves. The 0:0 scoreline leaves everything wide open ahead of the return leg on 16 July in Tampere — neither side has earned any advantage.
First half: Early booking, little cutting edge
The match got off to an early cautionary note when Differdange's Juan Bedouret was shown the first yellow card of the game in the 17th minute. By the 20th minute, head coach Yannick Kakoko was already forced to act: Ricciulli was replaced by Grilo in an early intervention that signalled the gameplan was not fully clicking. Ilves also made a double change in the 62nd minute, bringing on Tiitinen and Kilo — the latter picking up a yellow card almost immediately in the 65th minute. The tempo rose, but the quality of finishing did not. In the closing stages, both teams continued to rotate: Bruninho and Melhor came on for Differdange (81st and 82nd minutes), while Ilves introduced Riski and Baranov in the 82nd minute. The final minutes were marked by nervy fouls — Rale (85th) and Kanga (90th) were both booked for the Finnish side — but the breakthrough never came.
Assessment and outlook
A 0:0 is a result that keeps both clubs in contention while benefiting neither. For Differdange, who completed the domestic double in 2024/25 — winning both the league title and the cup for the first time since predecessor club Red Boys Differdange achieved the feat in 1979 — this first leg represented an opportunity to convert home advantage into capital. That opportunity went unused. Top scorer Samir Hadji, who had made a decisive impact with a penalty against The New Saints in the previous season, could not make the difference this time around. Coach Yannick Kakoko, who took charge of the side following the successful years under his predecessor, must now prepare his squad for the return leg in Tampere. It is the first competitive meeting between the two clubs in history — a landmark contest that has yet to produce an answer after 90 minutes. On 16 July, it is Finland's turn to host the tie that will determine who progresses to the next round.
