With the transfer, Salzburg have filled the vacancy created by Alexander Schlager’s move to Werder Bremen. Rather than signing another young prospect, the club deliberately opted for a goalkeeper who has already experienced several different environments and high-pressure situations.
Return to Austria
Früchtl is no stranger to Austrian football. In the summer of 2022, the former Bayern goalkeeper joined Austria Vienna and quickly established himself as the undisputed first-choice keeper. He made 80 competitive appearances for the “Violets” across two seasons and also gained experience in European competition.
In 2024, he moved to Serie A club US Lecce. However, his spell in Italy did not go as hoped from a sporting perspective. Früchtl was largely restricted to a backup role behind Wladimiro Falcone and made only two appearances in two years. Salzburg are now offering him the opportunity to make a fresh start in a league he already knows extremely well.
Developed at FC Bayern
The 1.93-metre goalkeeper came through the academy at FC Bayern Munich. He represented several youth teams, made 72 appearances for the reserves and spent several years as part of the extended first-team squad. However, his only competitive appearance for the senior side was a brief substitute outing. A loan spell at 1. FC Nürnberg also failed to produce the breakthrough he had hoped for.
Früchtl therefore took the decisive step in his professional career only after joining Austria Vienna. His time in the Austrian capital demonstrated that he can perform reliably as a first-choice goalkeeper over the course of an entire season.
Competition for Zawieschitzky
For the time being, however, the goalkeeping hierarchy in Salzburg is clear. Following Alexander Schlager’s move to Werder Bremen, Christian Zawieschitzky was named the new number one. The 19-year-old is expected to continue receiving playing time and developing. With Früchtl’s arrival, however, he now faces competition from a considerably more experienced goalkeeper.
At the same time, Salzburg did not want to rely exclusively on a very young group of goalkeepers following Schlager’s departure. Früchtl is expected to provide stability, experience and the necessary level of competition.
Sporting director Marcus Mann described the new signing as a goalkeeper with “excellent training and a wealth of experience” who can support the club’s young team. In his first statement as a Salzburg goalkeeper, Früchtl made it clear that, following two difficult years, he simply wants to give everything:
“I am very happy that the positive talks have led to a successful conclusion and that I am now at FC Red Bull Salzburg. As an Austria Vienna player, I came here several times around two years ago and do not have the best memories because we pretty much always lost. That makes me all the happier to have signed here and to now be on the other side. My responsibilities are actually very clear: I will give everything, do my absolute best and push my new teammates so that we can produce the best possible performances together.”
