Floriana FC have won the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 first qualifying round against Shamrock Rovers 2-0. At the Centenary Stadium in Malta, Robert Murić struck in the 46th minute and Mustapha Jah added a second in the 79th minute to give the home side a commanding advantage. Shamrock Rovers, who lined out in a 3-5-2 starting eleven, were unable to find the net across 90 minutes. Floriana operated in a 4-2-3-1.
Quiet first half, Murić strikes moments after the restart
The opening 45 minutes passed without a goal. Floriana, the 27-time Maltese champions under head coach Daniel Portela, controlled proceedings without ever truly threatening. The deadlock was broken almost immediately after the restart: Robert Murić, the Croatian winger Floriana recruited in the summer of 2026, converted in the 46th minute from an assist by Federico Varela to make it 1-0. Varela, a fixture in the Maltese side's midfield and a nominee for the Malta FA Foreign Player of the Year 2026, launched the move directly from kick-off after half-time. It was the cue for a one-sided second half.
Red card for Healy – Shamrock Rovers reduced to ten men
In the 58th minute, the situation turned dramatically worse for Shamrock Rovers. Healy picked up two yellow cards in quick succession and was shown the red card, leaving the Irish side to navigate the remaining 32 minutes a man down. Head coach Stephen Bradley responded with substitutions: in the 64th minute O'Regan replaced Mulraney and O'Sullivan came on for Watts, then in the 71st minute McGovern replaced Noonan, followed by Asamoah for Burke in the 72nd. None of the changes produced the desired stabilising effect.
Jah wraps it up – Floriana in a commanding position
The tie was settled in the 79th minute. Mustapha Jah, the 22-year-old Gambian striker wearing the number 19 shirt, made it 2-0. The centre-forward, born on 27 January 2004, scored on a historic occasion: it was the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Jah himself was booked in the immediate aftermath – in the 80th minute – before being substituted alongside Murić in the 81st minute. For Shamrock Rovers, the most successful club in the Republic of Ireland with 22 league titles and 26 FAI Cup trophies, it was a bitter evening. The Irish double winners of 2025, who had repeatedly reached European group-stage football in recent years, now face a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Floriana, meanwhile, are inching towards a historic achievement: the Maltese side have never before progressed past the first qualifying round of the Champions League. The second leg will reveal whether that record is finally set to change.
