Stadionul Zimbru, Chișinău – Moldovan champions FC Petrocub Hincești hosted three-time Albanian champions KF Egnatia Rrogozhinë in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 first qualifying round. After 90 minutes, the score stood at 1:1, leaving the tie perfectly poised ahead of the return leg on 15 July 2026.
Lightning start and equaliser before half-time
Petrocub lined up in a compact 5-4-1 formation and made an immediate statement. As early as the 1st minute, Petru Popescu gave the home side the lead — a dream start for the 23-year-old striker from Chișinău, who has been with Petrocub since March 2025 and wasted no time announcing his club's Champions League campaign. Egnatia, set up in a more attacking 3-5-2 system, were caught off guard in the opening exchanges.
The Albanians gradually found their footing, however. In the 29th minute, David picked up the first yellow card on the Petrocub side, momentarily disrupting the home team's rhythm. Six minutes later, Egnatia struck back: Altin Kryeziu restored parity at 1:1, assisted by Jaime. The Kranj-born midfielder, who previously appeared for SPAL and Torino in Serie A and has represented both Slovenia and Kosovo at international level, demonstrated his quality on the European stage. The half-time whistle came with a draw that felt entirely fair.
Red card casts a shadow over the second half
The second half began with a moment that fundamentally altered the complexion of the match: Egnatia's Aleksi was shown the red card in the 48th minute and was sent off. Petrocub now had a man advantage — yet despite their numerical superiority, the home side failed to find a winner. Egnatia defended resolutely, offering their opponents precious little in the way of clear-cut opportunities.
The contest grew more physical: Bakayoko (65') and Loukili (87') on the Egnatia side, along with Guera Djou (77') and Bors (84') for Petrocub, all received yellow cards. Bors was substituted shortly afterwards in the 88th minute. The closing stages passed without significant incident, as both teams settled for the draw.
The state of play and what comes next
The 1:1 first-leg result gives neither club a clear advantage. For Petrocub, who claimed their second Moldovan title in the 2025/26 season, the Champions League qualifying rounds represent a rare stage. For Egnatia, who were eliminated in the first qualifying round of the Champions League the previous season, the mission is to go one step further this time around. The return leg takes place on 15 July 2026 in Rrogozhinë — Egnatia will have home advantage and must score one more goal than Petrocub to progress.
