FC St. Pauli is increasingly facing the threat of relegation from the Bundesliga. Alexander Blessin’s team disappointed again in their 1-2 (0-2) loss to FSV Mainz 05 and remained far from closing the gap to safety. Mainz, on the other hand, clears the last doubt about their survival in the league.
Philipp Tietz (6’) and Philipp Mwene (40’) scored for Mainz, who had previously gone three games without a win. St. Pauli’s winless streak is even longer, as they have now failed to win in eight consecutive matches. The consolation goal by striker Abdoulie Ceesay came too late (87’).
Blessin’s team delivered a poor first-half performance. Mainz was clearly the better side in terms of play. Even in the second half, it became evident why St. Pauli is the league’s weakest team offensively. With St. Pauli’s defeat, 1. FC Heidenheim can still hope for a miracle to avoid relegation.
Frank Schmidt’s team remains in the race for the relegation playoff spot, which VfL Wolfsburg is also fighting for. In their upcoming matches in Cologne next Sunday (May 10) and in the season finale against Mainz (May 16), Heidenheim still has a “small glimmer of hope,” as captain Patrick Mainka said. Just weeks ago, the team had been ten points behind the relegation playoff spot and seemed far out of contention.
