The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 to extend their winning streak to two games. After a historically poor start to the season that saw them drop nine consecutive decisions, Philadelphia continued their turnaround. Colorado had opened the year strongly and, at 5-2-1, ranked among the better teams in the Western Conference. Even so, the Flyers ground out the victory in a hard-fought contest that remained tight throughout every period.
Michkov put Philadelphia in front
The Flyers laid the groundwork for the home win in the first period. Matvei Michkov opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a power-play snap shot, Philadelphia capitalizing on an Avalanche delay-of-game penalty. Denver Barkey and Trevor Zegras picked up the assists on the goal.
The early strike gave the Flyers control and forced Colorado to chase the game from the outset. The period ended 1-0 in Philadelphia's favour. For Matvei Michkov, the goal was another important step in what he hopes will be a bounce-back year. The right wing had worked to rediscover his form after a difficult second NHL season.
Colorado pulled one back in the second period
Philadelphia remained dangerous offensively in the second period and extended their lead. Matvei Michkov struck again in the 12th minute, this time with a wrist shot from the slot after a puck retrieval in the offensive zone. Noah Cates and Trevor Zegras were credited with the assists.
The Avalanche answered back before the second intermission. Martin Necas pulled one back in the 17th minute of the middle frame, with Devon Toews and Artturi Lehkonen recording the assists. Colorado cut the deficit to 2-1 from their perspective, leaving the period level at 1-1. The Flyers took a one-goal cushion into the second intermission, but Colorado kept the pressure on.
Acciari's goal proved to be the difference
Philadelphia restored their two-goal advantage early in the third period. Noel Acciari deflected an Oliver Bonk slap shot in front of the net for his first goal as a Flyer, with Trevor Zegras registering his third assist of the game. The goal proved to be the decisive moment, giving the Flyers a two-goal cushion once again.
Colorado refused to go quietly, however. T.J. Hughes scored in the 14th minute of the final period to keep the Avalanche in it — the rookie's second goal in as many games. Despite being pulled back to within one, Philadelphia held on for the remainder of the game. The third period ended 1-1.
The significance of the win
The 3-2 victory confirmed the Flyers' positive trajectory after their difficult start to the season. Rick Tocchet watched his team defeat a fast-starting Colorado side while responding twice to the opponent's answers. Matvei Michkov took center stage with his two-goal performance, while Noel Acciari supplied the crucial third-period marker.
For the Avalanche, it was their first meeting with Philadelphia in the 2026-27 season. Jared Bednar had to accept a narrow defeat despite Colorado finding the net in every period or equalizing at least once per frame. Philadelphia protected their lead through to the final buzzer and kept their small winning streak alive.
