The Washington Capitals kicked off the 2026/27 season with a 5-2 victory at the Carolina Hurricanes. The result was never seriously in doubt in Raleigh: Washington laid the groundwork early, then held firm despite a pair of Hurricanes goals. For Carolina, it was already the second game of the new season; for Washington, it was their opener.
Washington dominated the first period
The Capitals took control from the start and led 3-0 after the first period. Alex Tuch opened the scoring for Washington, Cole Hutson extended the lead, and Tuch struck again before the first intermission to complete a two-goal night. Pierre-Luc Dubois picked up assists on both of Tuch's goals, while Alexander Ovechkin and Tom Wilson each contributed an assist. Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas were credited with the helpers on Hutson's goal.
For Carolina, the game turned into a difficult exercise almost immediately. The Hurricanes found no adequate answers against Washington's tight-checking defence and were already chasing a significant deficit after one period. The opener also highlighted the individual significance of Alexander Ovechkin, who entered the new season as the NHL's all-time regular-season goals leader with 929.
Capitals extended their advantage
Washington maintained control through the second period, outscoring Carolina 2-1 in the frame. Jakob Chychrun pushed the lead further for the Capitals, with Dylan Strome picking up the assist. Carolina responded through Sebastian Aho to trim the deficit and briefly raised hopes of a comeback, but Ryan Leonard restored the four-goal cushion before the intermission. Dylan Strome and Jakob Chychrun added further assists in the period.
After forty minutes the score stood at 5-1 in Washington's favour. The Capitals capitalized on their chances consistently and kept the Hurricanes at arm's length for most of the evening. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour — who had guided Carolina to the Stanley Cup in 2026 — saw his team pull one back, but his side remained firmly on the back foot.
Carolina cut the deficit, but Washington held on
K. Miller scored the only goal of the third period for Carolina, but the late strike did nothing to alter the outcome. Washington protected the lead through the closing minutes and wrapped up the 5-2 victory. The final score: Carolina Hurricanes 2, Washington Capitals 5.
Carolina were without the injured Seth Jarvis. Goaltender Logan Thompson had been a key pillar for the Hurricanes last season, posting a save percentage of .912 and a goals-against average of 2.44. Much of the pre-game attention centred on Alexander Ovechkin, playing in his 22nd NHL season and with a particularly strong career record against Carolina. In the end, however, the evening belonged to the Washington Capitals, who opened their season with a dominant performance on the road.
