The decision was taken at a regular meeting of the supervisory board. Eberl’s previous deal had been due to expire in the summer of 2027, but the 52-year-old has now added another two years to his stay. Bayern have therefore secured long-term stability at executive level.
Eberl to continue on current path
Eberl has served as Bayern’s sporting CEO since 1 March 2024 and works closely on sporting matters with former Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund. His responsibilities include long-term squad planning, transfers, contract renewals and coaching decisions.
One of his first major tasks after returning to Munich was to find a successor to Thomas Tuchel. Bayern eventually appointed Vincent Kompany, a decision that initially raised a number of questions but has since proved successful.
Under Kompany, Bayern have won the Bundesliga in each of the past two seasons, while also lifting the DFB-Pokal in 2025/26. The Munich club also won the Supercup in both 2025 and 2026. Last weekend, the record champions beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to claim their first trophy of the new season.
Eberl has also played a central role in shaping the squad. Michael Olise and Luis Díaz are among the most high-profile signings made during his tenure. Olise quickly established himself as one of Bayern’s key attacking players following his move from Crystal Palace and was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2025/26. Several other leading players have also been tied down to long-term contracts.
Following the extension, Eberl once again emphasised his close connection to Bayern. He described the club as something close to his heart since his youth and said he wanted to continue along the current path together with the club’s decision-makers while doing everything possible to contribute to further sporting success. He also described the supervisory board’s confidence in him as a particularly valuable sign.
From Bayern academy player to sporting CEO
Eberl’s relationship with Bayern stretches back decades. Born in Lower Bavaria, he joined the club at the age of six and progressed through every level of the youth academy. The former defender also made one Bundesliga appearance for Bayern’s first team during the 1991/92 season.
He later played for VfL Bochum and Greuther Fürth before spending a large part of his playing career with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
It was at Gladbach that Eberl began his second career in 2005. He progressed from youth coordinator to sporting director and later became managing director of sport. During his long spell in charge, Gladbach re-established themselves as regular European competitors and qualified for the Champions League, with Eberl widely regarded as one of the key architects of one of the club’s most successful periods since the 1970s.
After leaving Gladbach in early 2022, he had a shorter spell at RB Leipzig before completing his return to Munich in 2024.
Dreesen also signs on until 2029
Alongside Eberl, Bayern have also extended the contract of CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. The 58-year-old has been a member of the FC Bayern München AG executive board since 2013.
After a career in banking, Dreesen joined Bayern as chief financial officer and became deputy CEO just one year later. He has led the club’s executive board since May 2023. His contract had already been extended until 2027 in 2024, but Bayern have now committed to him for a further two years, until the end of June 2029.
Together with board member for marketing and sales Rouven Kasper, Dreesen and Eberl will therefore remain at the heart of Bayern’s executive leadership for the long term. Supervisory board chairman Herbert Hainer cited continuity and stability as key reasons behind the decisions, with the club choosing to stay on its current sporting and commercial course.
