Nicolás Mejía won the qualification semifinal at the Shanghai Masters against Tseng Chun-hsin 6-4, with the Taiwanese player — also known as Jason Tseng — subsequently retiring from the match. The result kept Mejía firmly in contention for a place in the main draw of the ATP Masters 1000 hard-court event. With only one set completed before the retirement, a full match was never played out.
Mejía made his opportunity count in the opening set
Mejía entered the qualifying draw in Shanghai as the 14th seed. He took the opening set 6-4, and no further sets were contested. The outline of the match was therefore straightforward: Mejía claimed the only set played, and the encounter ended prematurely from there.
The match statistics underlined the winner's narrow but clear edge. Nicolás Mejía won 53 percent of total points and took 60 percent of games. On his own serve, he held in 80 percent of his service games. Tseng Chun-hsin competed but was unable to continue after dropping the set.
Serve and return proved decisive
Mejía landed 63 percent of his first serves and won 68 percent of first-serve points. His second serve was particularly effective, with 64 percent of those points going his way. Tseng hit eight aces, but his three double faults put additional pressure on his service games.
There was also a clear gap on return. Mejía won 45 percent of return points overall and was especially dominant on Tseng's second serve, converting 75 percent of those points. Tseng managed just 33 percent return points in total, leaving Mejía with the stronger platform to claim the set.
The error count also favoured the Colombian. Nicolás Mejía made 13 unforced errors, while Tseng Chun-hsin racked up 20. Mejía also struck 11 winners. Tseng posted 16 winners but could not translate that into a set win.
A significant result for the Colombian qualifier
The victory was another step in what has been a strong season for Mejía. The Bogotá native is currently Colombia's top-ranked player on the ATP Tour and reached a career-high ranking of 115 in August 2026. This year he won the ATP Challenger event in San Luis Potosí and made his Wimbledon main draw debut, advancing to the second round.
According to pre-match reports, this was the first career meeting between the two players. The Taipei-born Tseng was ranked around 215 in the ATP rankings at the time of the match and sits as his country's second-ranked player. A former ITF junior world No. 1 and winner of the French Open Boys' Singles in 2018, he brought a notable pedigree to the contest.
Following Tseng's retirement, the significance of the result centred squarely on Mejía's path through qualifying. Having already secured the deciding set, the Colombian preserved his shot at a main draw berth in Shanghai. For Tseng Chun-hsin, the campaign ended prematurely, with no further set played.
