The 40th Deutschland Tour crowned a worthy champion: 22-year-old Mexican and UAE Emirates-XRG rising star Isaac Del Toro claimed the overall victory on Sunday, underlining his rapid rise to the top of cycling. Just one month after his debut Tour de France podium, Del Toro dominated Germany’s premier stage race from start to finish—beginning with his prologue win in Bad Orb last Wednesday and culminating in a controlled finish on the 156.5 km final stage to Heilbronn.
In the end, his winning margin in the general classification stood at 53 seconds over France’s Louis Barré (Visma-Lease a Bike). Del Toro narrowly missed the final stage win: on the third ascent of the Jägerhaus—a 2.2 km climb tackled three times—he broke clear in a trio, attacked before the summit, and battled hard on the finish straight, but the peloton surged back, and Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) proved unbeatable in the sprint. Magnier was followed home by Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) and Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek).
“It was a great week. I’m very happy,” Del Toro reflected, having shouldered full leadership duties in the absence of his Tour de France captain, Tadej Pogačar—and delivering with distinction.
For the German fans at the Jägerhaus, a home victory wasn’t to be—Del Toro’s UAE Emirates-XRG teammate Nils Politt last tasted Deutschland Tour stage success in 2021. The race’s future, however, is secure: ASO and German Cycling have extended their partnership through 2050.
