The long-standing collaboration between Interwetten and Lothar Matthäus is entering a new chapter. Germany’s most-capped international has been working with the company since 2021, drawing on the experience gained during one of the most illustrious careers in German football history. Alongside his sporting expertise, the partnership encompasses advertising campaigns, events and experiences across a range of sports.
Two more years with Germany’s record international
Julian Zott, Head of Marketing & Brand Management at Eurotrade Int., believes the extension reflects the strength of the relationship built over the past five years.
“Few people embody passion, reliability and expertise at the very highest level quite like Lothar Matthäus. The fact that we have enjoyed five successful years together and are now extending our partnership for another two shows just how well this relationship works. Lothar lives and breathes football and sport, and he is always authentic – that’s exactly what fans appreciate about him,” Zott explained.
Matthäus is equally enthusiastic about continuing the partnership, particularly praising the atmosphere surrounding their work together.
“We simply work really well together! There’s always a great atmosphere at Interwetten, whether we’re doing a photo shoot, a media appearance or attending one of the various events. I enjoy myself, and I try to share that enjoyment with others,” said the 65-year-old.
Long-term relationships have been a recurring theme throughout Matthäus’s career, something he acknowledged with a touch of humour.
“Throughout my life, apart from my private life, of course, I’ve always had long-lasting relationships. I played 150 times for the German national team, spent more than 20 years at just three clubs and have been a Puma ambassador for 48 years. If I can achieve the same with Interwetten, I’ll be delighted.”
World Cup winner, record international and football legend
Interwetten’s decision to continue working with Matthäus also reflects his exceptional standing in the game. Born in Franconia, the former midfielder is one of Germany’s most decorated footballers, with a remarkable collection of individual and team honours.
Matthäus won the European Championship with West Germany in 1980 before captaining his country to World Cup glory in Italy a decade later. He had already finished as a World Cup runner-up in both 1982 and 1986.
With 150 international appearances, he remains Germany’s all-time record appearance holder. He featured at five World Cups and played in 25 matches at the tournament. His performances earned him the Ballon d’Or in 1990, followed by the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1991.
His achievements at club level were equally impressive. Matthäus won seven Bundesliga titles and two German Cups with Bayern Munich. During four seasons with Inter Milan, he helped the Italian giants claim the Serie A title in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991. He added another UEFA Cup triumph with Bayern in 1996.
His connections with Austrian football also go back many years. After retiring as a player, Matthäus managed SK Rapid Vienna and later worked as an assistant coach at Red Bull Salzburg.
From football analysis to motorsport adventures
Matthäus’s involvement with Interwetten extends well beyond football. A passionate follower of sport in general, he has taken part in a variety of campaigns and special activities, including trying his hand as an American football kicker with the New England Patriots and riding as a co-driver in a rally car.
“I’m a sports fan through and through, and elite sport in all its forms fascinates me. That’s exactly what makes working with Interwetten so varied,” Matthäus explained.
That variety is a major part of the partnership’s appeal, and both Matthäus and Interwetten are looking to build on it over the next two years.
There is also a special historical connection between the two. “Interwetten was founded in 1990, the very year I achieved the greatest sporting success of my career by winning the World Cup,” Matthäus pointed out.
Their shared story is now set to continue until at least 2028.
