Alexander Zverev won the US Open final against Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2. The top-seeded German prevailed in the biggest match of the season's final Grand Slam and claimed his second major title of the year. For Benjamin Todd Shelton, it was the first Grand Slam final of his career. The home favourite was beaten in front of nearly 24,000 raucous fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Zverev laid the foundation in the first set
Zverev started with sharp focus, breaking Shelton's very first service game. He struck again for a second break at 5-3. Both breaks came courtesy of double faults from the American, who could never find a reliable rhythm on serve throughout the opener. Zverev capitalised on his early advantage with conviction and took the set 6-3.
The numbers underscored his dominance. Zverev held serve on 95 per cent of his service games and won 73 per cent of points on his own serve. His first serve was particularly lethal: he won 85 per cent of first-serve points. Shelton, by contrast, held only 81 per cent of his service games and was forced to fight from behind from early on.
The tiebreak went decisively to the German
Ben Shelton raised his level in the second set. The American tightened up his return game and applied pressure on Zverev's serve at 4-5 and 5-6. The German navigated those dangerous moments, however, and forced a tiebreak. There, Zverev seized control immediately. He raced to a 5-0 lead, stayed ruthless throughout and won the tiebreak 7-2. That gave Zverev the second set 7-6, with Shelton on the wrong end of a 6-7.
Zverev faced just a single break point throughout the entire match. He also held serve for 66 consecutive service games until the final game of the third set. Even a time violation warning on his serve did nothing to unsettle him.
Shelton's revival was brief
Shelton remained patient in the third set. At 5-6, he pounced on some uncharacteristic errors from Zverev to earn his first break of the match. He converted it to take the set 7-5, making it 5-7 from Zverev's perspective. For a moment, the final appeared to be heading in a new direction.
The German's response was immediate. Shelton dropped his serve in the opening game of the fourth set. After a gruelling 24-shot rally, Zverev forced an unforced error on Shelton's backhand side, reclaiming control and snuffing out the American's momentum on the spot.
Zverev completed a masterclass
Zverev was near-flawless in the fourth set. Shelton found few answers to the German's baseline game and serve. Zverev broke again in the seventh game, then converted his first match point to close out the set 6-2. Only then did it seem to sink in for the German that the final was over.
The statistics reflected Zverev's superiority throughout: he won 53 per cent of total points and 56 per cent of games, while Shelton managed 47 and 44 per cent respectively. Zverev made 31 unforced errors to Shelton's 47. The German also won 86 per cent of his net approach points and converted 67 per cent of his break points, compared to just 33 per cent for Shelton.
The victory carried historic weight. It was the first time Zverev had entered a Grand Slam as the top seed in the seedings. Following his French Open title, the New York crown was his second Grand Slam title in the same season — making him just the fourth man of the Open Era to achieve that feat, and the first German to win the US Open men's singles since Boris Becker in 1989.
