In the space of just 18 months, the Ivorian winger has gone from a largely unknown talent at Leganés to a Bundesliga star and now one of the most expensive players in football history.
The development of his market value alone has been extraordinary. Leipzig signed Diomande from CD Leganés for around €20 million in the summer of 2025. Now the Bundesliga club will receive at least €125 million. According to Spanish newspaper “AS”, a further €15 million could be added in bonus payments, taking the overall package to as much as €140 million. The “Guardian” also reports a fixed fee of €125 million, although it puts the potential bonuses at €10 million. Since neither club has officially disclosed the financial details, the guaranteed €125 million fee is the figure considered most reliable.
From unknown talent to Bundesliga star
Diomande’s career path has been anything but conventional. Born in Abidjan in 2006, the attacking player spent part of his football education in the United States and played at the DME Academy in Florida between 2022 and 2024. In January 2025, he eventually joined Leganés.
It took him only a few months to attract attention. His LaLiga debut came, of all places, at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid. By the end of his first professional season, he had made ten league appearances, six of them starts, scoring two goals and providing two assists. Leganés had inserted a €20 million release clause into the contract of a player who was still completely unproven at senior level – Leipzig paid the full amount, well aware of the enormous potential Diomande possessed.
What happened next was something even Leipzig could hardly have expected. Within a few months, Diomande developed from a prospect into one of the most eye-catching wingers in the Bundesliga. In 36 competitive appearances for RB, he recorded 13 goals and ten assists. In the Bundesliga alone, he scored twelve goals and provided eight assists in 33 matches. At the end of the season, he was named “Rookie of the Season”.
Dribbling numbers at an elite level
Goals and assists tell only part of the story. Diomande’s standout quality is his dribbling. No Leipzig player came close to matching his figures in the Bundesliga last season.
“FotMob” credits the Ivorian with 4.3 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 59.9 per cent. That equates to slightly more than seven dribble attempts per 90 minutes. In total, he completed 118 successful dribbles – 50 more than any other Bundesliga player.
That is particularly remarkable given the volume. Diomande does not merely look for the occasional one-on-one situation; his game is built around them, yet he still wins well over half of those duels. He has also already shown remarkable efficiency in front of goal. His twelve Bundesliga goals came from just 53 shots, 26 of which were on target. His 0.73 goal contributions per 90 minutes are also exceptional for a 19-year-old winger in his first full Bundesliga season.
His output also significantly exceeded his Expected Goals. Statistical models put his Bundesliga total at just under seven xG, yet Diomande actually scored twelve goals. Such overperformance needs to be sustained over several seasons before firm conclusions can be drawn, but it does underline the finishing quality he has already shown.
Liverpool, PSG and Manchester City wanted Diomande
Those numbers quickly triggered a race among Europe’s biggest clubs. Liverpool were particularly interested in Diomande. Following Mohamed Salah’s departure, the “Reds” viewed him as a potential long-term solution on the right wing. An offer of around €100 million was rejected, and Liverpool are later reported to have bid as much as €116 million, equivalent to £100 million.
Paris Saint-Germain’s interest was also very concrete for a long time and at one stage appeared to be the most likely option. Diomande had already reached a basic agreement with PSG over a potential move. Manchester City also registered their interest and, according to “Sky”, indicated that they were prepared to offer a package worth around €100 million. Arsenal were another club to explore a move for the winger.
Then Real Madrid entered the race. Leipzig rejected an initial offer of €90 million plus €10 million in bonuses. The Spanish club gradually increased its bid while also convincing the player of its sporting project.
José Mourinho also played an important role. Diomande’s agent Nathan Campbell told “The Athletic” that Real Madrid’s new coach was actually the decisive factor. Mourinho spoke personally with Diomande in French and explained the role he had in mind for the quick and highly skilled dribbler. Chief scout Juni Calafat is also said to have played a major part in turning the transfer in Madrid’s favour within a short period.
PSG ultimately withdrew publicly from the negotiations, describing both the requested transfer fee and the salary demands as “completely excessive”. Real Madrid, however, were prepared to meet the overall financial package.
Most expensive Real Madrid signing in history
The fixed fee alone makes the deal historic. At €125 million, Diomande is, according to the current reports, the most expensive signing in Real Madrid history in terms of the guaranteed base fee.
Jude Bellingham initially cost Borussia Dortmund €103 million in 2023, Gareth Bale joined from Tottenham in 2013 for around €101 million, and Eden Hazard moved from Chelsea FC to Madrid in 2019 for approximately €100 million. Bellingham’s total fee can rise to around €134 million through bonuses. Diomande’s own add-ons could now take his transfer up to €140 million.
At the same time, he becomes the most expensive African footballer in history and by far RB Leipzig’s biggest sale. Leganés will benefit as well: the club is entitled to at least five per cent of the resale amount or the agreed profit on the transfer and could therefore receive another €6-7 million.
For Real Madrid, the enormous fee is above all an investment in the future. Diomande is only 19 but already possesses considerable experience, composure in front of goal and, above all, exceptional one-on-one quality at the highest level. In little more than a year, he has gone from ten LaLiga appearances for Leganés to becoming a €125 million player. He must now prove that his rapid rise can continue in the white shirt – a challenge that will not be easy, not least because of the significantly greater competition for places in Madrid.
