This year’s match will not take place at Wembley, but at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Kick-off is scheduled for Sunday, August 16 at 3pm UK time. Arsenal qualified after winning their first Premier League title in 22 years, while Manchester City lifted the FA Cup. It will also be City’s first competitive match under Enzo Maresca, who has been tasked with following an extraordinary era after Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Arsenal add even more quality to a strong squad
The champions have so far made two major additions to their first-team squad this summer. Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge and has already impressed during pre-season. The Greek left winger adds further pace and goal threat to an attack that already features players such as Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke.
Even more eye-catching, however, was the signing of Bruno Guimarães. Arsenal paid around £75 million for the long-time Newcastle standout, who can operate both as a number six and as a number eight. Alongside Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Arteta now has an exceptionally strong group of midfielders at his disposal.
There are, however, significant concerns in defence. William Saliba is set to be sidelined for an extended period after aggravating a back injury at the World Cup. Jurriën Timber is also expected to miss several more weeks following groin surgery. Arsenal are therefore still looking to add another defender and are reportedly close to signing Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen.
Anderson the marquee signing in City’s rebuild
Manchester City, by contrast, are going through a more substantial transition. Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Aké have all left the club, while Maresca becomes the first man other than Guardiola to take charge of City in ten years.
The standout arrival is undoubtedly Elliot Anderson. City signed the 23-year-old England international from Nottingham Forest in a deal reportedly worth up to £116 million. Anderson impressed at the World Cup and can fill several roles in central midfield. His importance could increase further if Rodri, who continues to be linked with FC Barcelona, eventually leaves Manchester.
City have also added 17-year-old winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for around £10 million plus bonuses. Experienced Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli joined from Olympique Marseille and has signed a contract until 2028.
City’s injury situation is considerably better than Arsenal’s. Maresca said on Friday that his squad is generally fit for the game, with Erling Haaland also available. Rodri has returned to training following back surgery, although it remains unclear how significant a role he can already play on Sunday after his lengthy absence.
More than just a glorified friendly?
The recent history between the two sides adds further intrigue. Arsenal won the league, but lost their last two meetings with City. Manchester won 2-1 in the Premier League in March and had already beaten Arsenal 2-0 in the League Cup final three weeks earlier. Arsenal were more consistent across the season, but City still demonstrated their enormous individual quality in the biggest head-to-head encounters.
Even so, too much should not be read into Sunday’s result. A number of internationals returned late from the World Cup, Arsenal are missing two key defenders and Maresca has only been working with his squad for a few weeks. The match may therefore be more revealing in terms of how quickly City have adapted to their new coach, what structural changes are already visible and how effectively Arsenal can compensate for their defensive absences.
Maresca, however, does not want the game to be treated as a friendly. It represents his first opportunity to win a trophy with City. Five days later, Arsenal begin the defence of their Premier League title against newly promoted Coventry City. Manchester City host Bournemouth on August 23 – and by then, the far more meaningful battle for English football’s biggest domestic prize will be underway.
