Manchester City won the 199th Manchester derby 1-0 at Old Trafford and made it four Premier League victories from four under Maresca. In an intense contest from the outset, City were reduced to ten men after Foden’s red card in the 23rd minute, before Haaland struck on the hour. United enjoyed far more of the ball after the dismissal but struggled to turn their numerical advantage into clear-cut chances.
Foden loses his head as City are forced to adjust
Even before the red card, both managers were using their attacking players in fluid roles. Michael Carrick nominally deployed Matheus Cunha through the middle, but repeatedly allowed him to interchange with Marcus Rashford on the left. Maresca, meanwhile, often asked Enzo Fernández to drift away from midfield partner Elliot Anderson towards the flank to give City greater width in possession.
The game changed completely after 23 minutes. Following a duel with Bruno Fernandes, Foden was on the ground and kicked out at the United captain, catching him in the upper body. Referee Michael Oliver deemed the incident violent conduct and showed a straight red card, a decision that was upheld by the VAR. Maresca later accepted the dismissal in principle, although he felt Fernandes should also have been punished more severely for the preceding challenge.
City reacted immediately to going a man down. Rayan Cherki initially shifted across to Foden’s right-sided position, the distances between the lines became tighter and Haaland remained up front as the main outlet. Without the ball, City increasingly dropped into a compact 4-4-1 designed above all to protect the centre.
United inevitably took control of possession but found few ways through the visitors’ disciplined defensive structure before the break. The hosts often circulated the ball in front of City’s shape without injecting enough speed into their combinations. Their best chance of the first half came shortly before the whistle, when Rashford struck the post from a free-kick.
The Red Devils turn up the pressure, City stay compact
Despite being down to ten, Maresca did not simply retreat into damage-limitation mode. At half-time he introduced Iliman Ndiaye for Cherki, adding a quicker player on the right who could immediately attack space after turnovers. United pushed higher and increasingly pinned City inside their own half.
Six minutes after the restart, Kobbie Mainoo also hit the post. The midfielder was one of United’s most influential players, keeping the ball moving cleanly under pressure and repeatedly joining attacks from deeper positions. Bruno Fernandes also tried to inject more creativity with passes between the lines and into the half-spaces.
United now had a clear territorial advantage and finished with 16 attempts, but genuinely high-quality chances remained scarce. Their xG total of 0.95 summed that up well: for a team that played more than an hour with an extra man and controlled long spells of the contest, the overall quality of the chances was relatively modest.
City defended their penalty area with discipline, forcing United into long-range efforts or difficult shots under pressure, while still carrying enough threat on the counter to prevent the hosts from committing absolutely everyone forward.
Haaland scores after lengthy VAR check
City made their decisive breakthrough in the 60th minute. After a cross from Joško Gvardiol, Haaland finished from a tight angle to make it 1-0. The assistant initially raised the flag for offside, leading to a lengthy VAR review. Patrick Dorgu’s outstretched foot, however, had narrowly played Haaland onside.
The more complicated issue concerned Enzo Fernández. The Argentine was clearly in an offside position and jumped towards the cross without making contact with the ball. With Lisandro Martínez positioned directly next to him and forced to react to his movement, the key question was whether Fernández had interfered with play despite not touching the ball. The VAR decided that there was no punishable offside offence and awarded the goal. Carrick struggled to understand the interpretation afterwards, arguing that Martínez had clearly been forced to react because of Fernández’s presence.
The goal changed the balance of the match once more. United pushed even more players forward and tried to pin City permanently around their own box. The visitors dropped deeper, kept the distance between midfield and defence extremely tight and increasingly gave up any ambition of maintaining prolonged spells of possession.
Haaland nevertheless remained hugely important. The Norwegian was not only the scorer, but also City’s main target for long balls and counter-attacks. He occupied United’s centre-backs, won several direct duels and prevented the hosts from pushing their entire back line into the attacking half.
United keep coming, but City hold firm
Carrick added Benjamin Šeško and later Joshua Zirkzee in the closing stages to increase United’s presence in the penalty area. Even then, however, the hosts rarely found clean solutions against City’s deep block. Many attacks ended with crosses or second balls that were dealt with by the tightly packed defence.
Joško Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes were particularly important in that phase. Both defended aggressively when stepping out, won key duels and repeatedly cleared danger inside the box. City finished with 25 clearances, underlining just how much defending was required in the final stages.
The visitors still carried a threat of their own. Fernández forced Senne Lammens into an excellent save on the counter, with the ball then clipping the post. Moments like that prevented United from completely abandoning their defensive cover.
The final major chance still fell to the hosts. Deep into stoppage time, Bryan Mbeumo found space for a dangerous effort, but Gianluigi Donnarumma reacted sharply to preserve City’s victory.
The xG figures also underline the unusual nature of the game. United finished on 0.95 despite their extended numerical advantage, while City recorded 0.99. The 1-0 scoreline therefore did not run completely against the quality of the chances created. United had more possession and considerably more attacking actions, but City protected the most important areas better and converted one of their few clear openings.
City stay perfect, United remain stuck in mid-table
City now have 12 points from four matches and remain perfect under Maresca. They sit second behind Arsenal on goal difference. United, meanwhile, have just four points and are 13th after suffering their second league defeat of the season.
Both teams turn their attention to the League Cup next. United host Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, while City welcome Norwich City a day later. In the Premier League, the Red Devils travel to Fulham next weekend, while City face Sunderland at home.
